What is professional teeth whitening?
Professional teeth whitening is a safe, effective cosmetic treatment that lightens the shade of your teeth by breaking down surface and deep stains. Unlike over-the-counter products, dentist-grade whitening uses professional-strength peroxide gels that deliver faster, more dramatic results.
At Krishna Dental, we offer both in-office whitening for instant results and custom at-home trays for gradual whitening. In-office treatments are completed in 45 to 60 minutes, while at-home kits deliver beautiful results over 2 to 3 weeks with the convenience of treatment at your schedule.
Treatment at Krishna Multispeciality Dental Clinic starts from Rs 2,500 and is supervised by Dr. Vidya Sahithi Atluri, MDS (Prosthodontist), who customises the whitening strength to your needs. Most patients see their teeth lighten by 4 to 8 shades in a single in-office session, with a protective barrier applied to your gums and a desensitising agent for sensitive teeth.
What causes tooth discolouration?
Coffee, tea & wine
Dark beverages and acidic drinks are leading causes of tooth discoloration. Their pigments stick to tooth enamel over time, creating stubborn stains.
Tobacco use
Smoking and chewing tobacco cause severe, yellow-brown stains that are difficult to remove with regular brushing alone.
Age & natural wear
As you age, the protective enamel layer thins, revealing the darker dentin underneath. This is a natural, inevitable process.
Medications
Certain antibiotics (like tetracycline), antihistamines, and other medications can cause intrinsic tooth discoloration over time.
How does the whitening process work?
Dental examination
We examine your teeth and gums to ensure they're healthy and suitable for whitening. We'll address any cavities or gum issues first.
Shade assessment
We determine your current tooth shade using a professional shade guide. We'll discuss your desired shade and what's realistically achievable.
Protective preparation
We protect your gums with a barrier and apply a desensitising agent if you have sensitive teeth. Your lips are protected with petroleum jelly.
Whitening application
Professional-grade whitening gel is carefully applied to the front surface of each tooth. The gel is left to work for 15-minute intervals, often with activating light.
Results review
We rinse away the gel and check your new shade. You'll see dramatic results immediately. We apply a fluoride treatment to strengthen enamel.

Keeping your smile bright
For the first 48 hours after whitening, teeth are more porous and prone to staining, so it helps to follow a simple “white diet”: skip tea, coffee, red wine, turmeric-heavy curries, and other strongly coloured foods and drinks during that window. Mild, temporary sensitivity to cold is common and settles on its own within a day or two.
After that, your regular brushing routine is all that's needed to maintain results for months. Touch-up sessions every 6–12 months (or a take-home kit for occasional use) keep the brightness going, especially if you drink a lot of tea or coffee day to day.
One thing worth knowing beforehand: whitening only works on natural tooth enamel — existing crowns, veneers, or fillings won't lighten, so if you have visible restorations on front teeth, we'll talk through how to keep your smile looking even.
In-office whitening vs take-home kits
In-office laser whitening gives the fastest, most dramatic result — most patients see several shades of improvement in a single one-hour visit, under direct supervision so the process is controlled and comfortable throughout.
Take-home kits with custom-fitted trays work more gradually over one to two weeks and are a good option if you'd rather whiten at your own pace, or want a top-up kit to maintain results from an in-office visit. We can advise which suits your teeth and schedule best at consultation.
Many patients combine both — an in-office session for an immediate boost before an event, followed by an occasional take-home tray to maintain the result over the following months.
It's worth setting realistic expectations before you start: whitening works best on yellowish staining from food, drink, and age, and results vary from person to person depending on your natural tooth shade and the cause of discolouration. Staining from certain medications (like tetracycline) taken in childhood, or from a dead or root-canal-treated tooth, often responds differently and may need a different approach entirely, such as internal bleaching or a veneer, rather than standard whitening. At your consultation, we'll take a look and give you an honest read on how much brighter your specific smile is likely to get, rather than promising a one-size-fits-all result. Either way, whitening remains one of the fastest, least invasive ways to noticeably refresh your smile — most patients see a visible difference after just one session, with no downtime and no changes to the tooth structure itself.
